A perceptron-based scaled neural predictor (SNP) was implemented to emphasize the most recent branch histories via the following three approaches: (1) expanding the size of tables that correspond to recent branch histories, (2) scaling the branch histories to increase the weights for the most recent histories but decrease those for the old histories, and (3) expanding most recent branch histories to the whole history path. Furthermore, hash mechanisms, and saturating value for adjusting threshold were tuned to achieve the best prediction accuracy in each case. The resulting extended SNP was tested on well-known floating point and integer benchmarks. Using the SimpleScalar 3.0 simulator, while different features have different impact depending on whether the test is floating point or integer, overall such a well-tuned predictor achieves an improved prediction rate compared to prior approaches.

With a dramatic expansion in quantity and variety, the amount of recent history source materials has surpassed the sum total of those available for all earlier dynasties. At the same time, compared with the case in ancient history study, the obscure boundary of source materials has made it difficult for historians to locate and obtain what they need for their research. Since it is impossible to exhaust or to ascertain the boundary of relevant sources, scholars either retreat into narrower fields or make arbitrary interpretations of materials, both contributing to the loss of orientation in historical study, and, for that matter, eroding the integrity of historiography. Historians must, first and foremost, acquire a comprehensive understanding of the discipline before they can undertake studies on any particular subject, which is the proper way to conduct historical study and to avoid short-sightedness or a tunnel vision of the scene. The author of this paper believes that it is urgent to resolve the dilemma in preserving and utilizing source materials by publishing as many materials as possible efficiently so that scholars on recent Chinese history can stand on an equal footing as far as materials are concerned. Only in this way will they be able to undertake deeper investigations, to uncover the complex correlation between source materials and historical study, and ultimately, to contribute to recent history study as a whole.

The effects of recent history on the undrained behaviour of very loose and saturated Hostun RF clean sand are investigated in this paper. From an initial isotropic stress state in the triaxial plane, recent histories are generated by isotropic consolidation followed by standard drained triaxial preshear in compression, up to a desired value of axial strain or mobilized stress ratio, and unloading to an initial stress ratio. Subsequent undrained behaviour in triaxial compression is analysed in detail. This paper contributes to the traits explaining the progressive transformation of a compressive and unstable behaviour of loose sand into a dilative and stable behaviour of dense-like sand by previous history, while remaining in the same state of loose density. Experiments show a large pseudo-elastic domain induced by recent history in terms of effective stress paths, function of the initially mobilized stress ratio level, a unique initial gradient of the effective stress paths depending on the stress ratio at the beginning of the undrained shearing, a progressive appearance of dilatancy and a surprising evolution the undrained behaviour of loose sand. Experimental results evidence the important role of the recent deviatoric strain history, from any initial isotropic or anisotropic stress state. This paper also offers a comprehensive understanding of the history mechanisms created by simple linear stress paths with fixed direction in the classical triaxial plane.

The stress-strain behaviour of overconsolidated soil is non-linear and the stiffiiess depends on the current state and stress history. In addition to the overall stress history which is best described by the overconsolidation ratio, the recent stress history- either a sudden change in the direction of the stress path or a period of time at a constant stress state-has a major effect on subsequent stiffiiess. The effects of a change in the direction of the loading path on the stiffness of overconsolidated soil were examined in laboratory stress path tests on reconstituted samples of London Clay. Further tests were carried out on reconstituted samples of other soils with a range of plasticities. The test results showed that the behaviour of over-consolidated soil is largely inelastic and highly nonlinear, and that the recent history has a major effect on the subsequent stiffiiess, particularly for relatively small changes of stress or strain. For reconstituted samples of London Clay the stiffiiess near the start of a loading path was found to vary by up to an order of magnitude following different rotations of the stress path. For other soils with lower plasticities the variations were smaller but still significant.

Author SummaryFew of us know our family histories more than a few generations back. It is therefore easy to overlook the fact that we are all distant cousins, related to one another via a vast network of relationships. Here we use genome-wide data from European individuals to investigate these relationships over the past 3,000 years, by looking for long stretches of genome that are shared between pairs of individuals through their inheritance from common genetic ancestors. We quantify this ubiquitous recent common ancestry, showing for instance that even pairs of individuals from opposite ends of Europe share hundreds of genetic common ancestors over this time period. Despite this degree of commonality, there are also striking regional differences. Southeastern Europeans, for example, share large numbers of common ancestors that date roughly to the era of the Slavic and Hunnic expansions around 1,500 years ago, while most common ancestors that Italians share with other populations lived longer than 2,500 years ago. The study of long stretches of shared genetic material promises to uncover rich information about many aspects of recent population history.

Like the plague of times gone by. What exactly were the risks? How possibly severe? What were the appropriate precautions? What were potential solutions? Reports in the media varied. Sometimes they even conflicted. With life and death possibly at stake, how would an average citizen know which claims were trustworthy? The COVID-19 crisis has dramatically underscored the need for functional scientific literacy. Now that the initial shock has passed, we are well positioned to reflect on recent history. What information seemed persuasive, but was misleading or not true? What apparently unlikely claims later turned out to be reliable? What can we learn from experience about how to assess any particular scientific claim? The customary wisdom – this month's Sacred Bovine – is that we should judge the arguments ourselves. This study examined how prospective social studies teachers evaluate their experiences conducting oral histories regarding Turkey’s recent history. The research was completed in a course called History of the Republic of Turkey in the Faculty of Education at Sakarya University. Thirty-four social studies teacher candidates participated in the study. Based on a phenomenological research design (a qualitative research method), the data were obtained via semi-structured interviews consisting of 5 questions developed for this study. Content analysis was used to analyze the data. The prospective social studies teachers reported that their experiences completing oral histories related to recent Turkish history positively affected their views of the study of history and that their oral history experiences exposed them to diverse perspectives. The primary difficulties they encountered conducting their oral histories concerned the source persons they did oral histories. They also reported that they would like to practice oral history in their future social studies classes.

During the 1970s Belgian academic historians added recent history to the academic history course. Recent history, referring to the period from the First World War to the present day, was recognized as a subdiscipline of contemporary history. Belgian research institutes of twentieth-century history emerged. It is little known that it was the protagonists of Belgian history education, and not academic historians, who from the 1940s promoted the integration of recent history. In history education, academic historians’ common objections to the study of the supposedly ‘too close’ and ‘subjective’ recent history were outweighed by ethical and societal imperatives. Democratic citizenship education demanded closer examination of the world wars and was stimulated by UNESCO’s and the Council of Europe’s peace education projects. Official encouragement to research recent history was also lacking, due to troubled Belgian war memories. Yet Belgian proponents of history education founded international commissions to stimulate study of the Second World War. The impact of these educational initiatives was felt in the inclusion of recent history in Belgian history textbooks and the academic institutionalization of recent history. Yet the promotion of a conciliatory approach to the Second World War clashed with internal community conflicts resulting from a regionalization of war memories.

The Transformational Decade shows the transformation that took place in American life from the attack on the World Trade Center to the emergence of the Obama presidency. It is not a strict history, but rather snapshots of a decade that has fundamentally altered perceptions of the United States. In some respects, this book is modeled after Frederick Lewis Allen’s Only Yesterday and Since Yesterday, acclaimed books that sought to capture the spirit of the 1920s and ’30s. London sees the period from 2001 to 2008 as “post yesterday,” a period that broke with the past, challenged the essence of the free market, and contested America’s role on the world stage. In an effort to limn these snapshots from recent history, London has written several “decade” books: The Overheated Decade, The Counterfeit Decade, and The Decade of Denial. This book, The Transformational Decade, differs in that it represents a separation from the past. London illuminates a decade that he considers to be a new and more frightful period than any in recent American history.
