Abstract

Three measures of dietary restraint, a subscale of Stunkard and Messick's Three Factor Eating Questionnaire (TFEQ), a subscale of Van Strien, Frijters, Bergers, and Defares' Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire (DEBQ), and Herman and Polivy's Revised Restraint Scale (RS) were analyzed by four "readability" assessment formulae. Reading grade equivalents ranged from 4.5 to 8.5 for the RS, from 5 to 7.6 for the DEBQ,and from 6 to 9.2 for the TFEQ. Results suggest chat all instruments are sufficiently comprehensible to permit use with persons who have successfully completed junior high school. Specific recommendations are made for other groups of individuals.
