Abstract

In connection with the extensive use of pyrolusite in the sulfuric acid leaching of uranium from ores, a study was made of the reaction between UO2 and MnO2 in a sulfuric acid solution, and possible mechanisms were discussed. The experimental data show that the reaction apparently occurs at the points of contact of the hydrated surface layers of UO2 and MnO2; the rate of the process is limited by steric hindrances. On this basis the role of iron ions was also considered in the reaction between a solid oxidizing agent (pyrolusite) and primary minerals of uranium in the acid leaching of uranium-containing ores.
