Abstract

Specific environmental statements concerning developments of clinical waste incinerators in the UK were identified. The authors of these statements were surveyed regarding their perception of the quality of the statement, and similarly the relevant planning authority was surveyed for its opinions on the statement. These subjective evaluations were compared with the results of an objective assessment of the statements' quality. This analysis highlighted several differences between the authors and planners in their perception of statement quality, and also revealed the poor quality of several of the statements. Improved communication and training are suggested as a means of improving the quality of the EIA process.
