Abstract

Abstract : The rate of decomposition of SF6 at high temperatures has been investigated by others. The present experiment was designed to check these results and to investigate the susceptibility of SF6 to attack by molecular and atomic oxygen. An experimental program was carried out in a conventional 1.5 in. diameter stainless steel shock tube behind incident shocks in mixtures of SF6, SF6 + O3, and SF6 + O2, all diluted with Ar. Initial shock tube pressures were varied from 10 to 100 torr; the temperature range over which kinetic data were obtained was about 1600 to 2200K. The SF6 was monitored via its ir emission and the O-atoms, rapidly produced by the thermal decomposition of the O3 in the shock front, were monitored by following the chemiluminescent process O + O to O2 + light at 3550A. It was found that neither O-atoms nor O2-molecules enhanced the rate of disappearance of SF6.
