Abstract

This chapter takes on the challenges facing macrocriminology, a field of study that has “made very little progress” in understanding changes in the national crime rate. It contrasts this with the advances that have been made in understanding individual differences in offending, what is referred to as microcriminology. A discussion ensues on some of the key factors that have been put forth to explain changes in the crime rate.
