Abstract This article aims to provide a reassessment of the relationship between God and abstract objects. This reassessment will provide a new conceptualisation of this important relationship and will be formulated, first, within the theoretical framework of ‘Theistic Aspectivalism’, which is grounded on the notion of an aspect, proposed by Donald L.M. Baxter, which provides a means to ward off the ‘Bootstrapping Problem’. Second, within the theoretical framework of ‘Theistic Essentialism’, which is based on the notion of essence and essential dependence, as proposed by Kit Fine, Jonathan Lowe, and Katherin Koslicki, which provides a metaphysical basis for the relationship between God and abstract objects to be further elucidated and for the position of ‘Platonic Theism’ to be free from the primary issues that are often raised against it.

What's in a National Stereotype? An Introduction to Imagology at the Threshold of the 21st Century
 • Aug 15, 2006
 • Language and Intercultural Communication
 • William L Chew

Image studies, or imagology, was traditionally subsumed under the uncritical notion of ‘national character’, which was itself replaced by the constructivist term ‘national stereotype’. Since its origins in comparative literature, the field has moved beyond the narrow disciplinary confines of the humanities, with their predominantly qualitative methodology, and become truly interdisciplinary. This happened in two steps. First, by bringing history into the picture, thereby adding a strong diachronical approach and additional elements of theory. Secondly, by attracting the interest of social scientists – in the main psychologists, sociologists, and social anthropologists – and, in the process, adding further theoretical frameworks and quantitative methodologies typically absent from the humanities. This has resulted in a whole array of insights and models. Specialists aside, however, mainstream scholars are still largely unaware of the field's essential notions, insights, models, disciplinary composition and claims to relevance. This article, therefore, provides a brief survey of the state of imagology on the threshold of the 21st century.

The Facilitative Role of the Interaction Hypothesis: Using Interactional Modification Techniques in the English Communicative Classroom
 • Mar 5, 2019
 • Polo del Conocimiento
 • Diego Patricio Ortega-Auquilla + 2 more

English language teachers are expected to implement lessons directed by the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) into today’s classrooms. In this regard, it is pivotal to know about the theoretical framework of this key language teaching approach. The framework is partly made up of one of the most crucial Second Language Acquisition (SLA) hypotheses called the Interaction Hypothesis (IH). The IH claims that second language development is better facilitated when learners participate in negotiated interaction. From a CLT perspective, a second language is acquired more effectively through interaction and communication. When language teachers attempt to design and deliver classroom instruction grounded in CLT, it is imperative to be familiar with the essential notions behind the IH and its facilitative role in SLA. Therefore, this paper provides key information on the hypothesis at hand by analyzing its early version and updated version. In addition, Krashen’s comprehensible input and Hatch’s role of interaction and conversation on L2 learning are highlighted, because the IH evolved from these two scholars’ seminal works. This paper also deals with three key interactional modification techniques - comprehension checks, confirmation checks, and clarification requests – promoted by the IH. With the intent of facilitating language learning, the design and deliver of communicative-oriented lessons should have a central role in the classroom. However, lessons are more likely to be effective when teachers take the theory of the IH into practice by allowing learners to engage in negotiation of meaning through the use of the aforementioned interactional modifications.

What Drives the Institutionalization of Performance Measurement Systems in Indonesian Local Government?
 • Mar 29, 2019
 • GATR Journal of Business and Economics Review
 • Shuo Seah + 2 more

Objective - The objective of this paper is to explore and understand the motivators of institutionalization of Performance Measurement Systems (PMS) in the Indonesian Local Government (ILG), particularly in the Batu municipality presenting the performance paradoxes. Performance accountability issues have been encouraging the Batu municipality to implement PMS since the beginning of the 2000s. Methodology/Technique - The theoretical framework and interpretation of this study are adopted from the institutional theory (coercive, mimetic, normative, and allomorphism) which is used to analyze the phenomenon. The researchers employ a single case study to scrutinize the motivators of institutionalization by elaborating on document analysis conducted from the interviews of 10 employees in a different range of management levels (top, middle, and lower). Findings - The results of this study reveal that exogenous (coercive, mimetic and normative) and endogenous (allomorphism) drivers encourage the institutionalization of PMS in the Batu municipality with coercive pressure as a major driver and allomorphism as a mere ceremonial driver (rather than an instrument). Novelty - The practical implications of this study can be used to improve the PMS process and the quality of performance reporting in the Batu municipality and in other local governments. This paper is also expected to fill the gap in existing literature on the implementation of PMS within a developing country (in this case, Indonesia). Type of Paper: Empirical Paper. Keywords: Performance Measurement Systems; Institutional Theory; Indonesian Local Government; Batu Municipality. JEL Classification: P47, M48, P49. DOI: https://doi.org/10.35609/jber.2019.4.1(3)

The professor's body: discourses on subjectivity to reflect on nurses' education.
 • Jan 1, 2018
 • Revista brasileira de enfermagem
 • Paulo Sérgio Da Silva + 1 more

to reflect on the body of the nursing professor in the subjectivity discourse. this is a reflective essay on the theoretical and practical reverberations of the nursing professor's body based on the Deleuzoguattarian discourse. in the theoretical framework, the body of the nursing professor was considered as a producer of subjectivities and understood without organs, surrounded by strengths, desires, and affections. In the practical framework, we discussed pedagogical strategies developed by professors, such as dramatic games, simulated scenes, presentation of the line of care and living portfolio, characterized by stimulating nursing students to value political, civic, creative, and supportive dimensions. based on the subjectivity discourses, the professor's body was demystified as uniquely holder of knowledge, and all participants in the educational scenario were considered active protagonists of collective knowledge.

Methods for the selection of assistive technology in neurological rehabilitation practice
 • Dec 7, 2009
 • Scandinavian Journal of Occupational Therapy
 • Anja Friederich + 2 more

Objectives: To identify theoretical frameworks and instruments used by rehabilitation professionals to perform the selection process of assistive technology (AT) in neurological rehabilitation centres in six Western European countries. Design: Descriptive, exploratory study by using survey design. Methods: Sixty neurological rehabilitation centres were selected from the total number (n = 259) of centres, identified through a search of official databases from national bodies and associations, with 10 in each country. Each centre was approached to identify a professional to be contacted. Custom-designed questionnaires with multiple-choice and open-ended questions were sent out by e-mail and regular mail to each of these professionals. Results: Thirty questionnaires were returned, of which 29 could be analysed. Ten participants reported using a theoretical framework to select AT. Four models, three frames of reference, and one international classification were mentioned. Fifteen professionals replied to the question on which instruments they use by mentioning one or more methods; 14 participants stated that they used no specific instruments or left the question open. The instruments mentioned show a broad variety, the majority of the published ones not being AT-specific. Professionals often use self-made tools to fill this gap. Conclusion: There is a lack of evidence-based AT-specific methods for the selection process. The development of comprehensive, easy to use tools for the selection of AT is recommended.

 • Revista Brasileira de Enfermagem
 • Nara Marilene Oliveira Girardon-Perlini + 2 more

to analyze the application of methodological aspects of Grounded Theory in Brazilian nursing thesis. qualitative, descriptive study elaborated based on theses available in the CAPES Thesis and Dissertations Catalog, located with the search for the terms "Teoria Fundamentada nos Dados" OR "Grounded Theory", from 2013 to 2017. The data obtained were analyzed, considering the Grounded Theory methodological assumptions. observance of Grounded Theory basic concepts and articulation with several theoretical frameworks in the conduct of the investigations are strengthening aspects of the method. However, dissent in the description of the operationalization of the stages and naming of the elaborated construct weaken the methodological quality. Final considerations: the methodological consistency provided by Grounded Theory has the potential to demonstrate the studies' rigor and reliability conducted and theories generated. It is necessary to deepen theoretical-conceptual studies to elucidate discrepancies in the applicability in nursing research.
