Abstract

it is well known that the most effective species of streptococcı which plays role in forming caries is Streptococcus mutans. The aim of this study is to investigate the etfects of the mouthrinse which contains 0.05 % of sodium fluoride (NaF) on the number of S.mutans and to determine whether it decreases the caries risk or not. in this investigation, the number of streptococcı in saliva of caries-free 64 children in 9-1 O years old an caries-active 65 students at the same age were examined. Besides the number of streptococcı in saliva, their prevalance according to the species, the quantitative and qualitative alterations after applications of 0.05 % of NaF mouthrinse tor two months period were also examined. it was found that the number and the ratio of S.mutans was higher than the other types of streptococci. The number and the prevalance of streptococci significantly decreased after using the mouthrinse which contains 0.05 % NaF. On the other hand, it was statistically determined that the number of S.mutans was parallel to caries existance.
