Abstract

An ancient Thracian tomb with valuable wall paintings was discovered when grave-robbers attempted entry. The sudden opening drastically changed the stable environment, making its preservation extremely complex. Working in a developing nation with extremely limited funding, a group composed of conservators, an engineer, a biologist, a geologist and an administrator is attempting to devise effective conservation approaches. The nation and religion of the makers of the tomb have disappeared and the monument now exists in a world where it has no immediate religious or political significance. However, it holds important historical and cultural information of great interest to present and future generations. One goal of the project is to provide access to the monument in its authentic environment while isolating it from active sources of deterioration. It is proposed that the interior will be displayed by isolating visitors from the painting in a transparent, separately-conditioned chamber, accessible through the floor.
