Abstract

ISEE-362 Objective: Physical development is the positive indicator of child health, impacts on functional level of organs, and reflects many different factors. The aim of the study was the analysis of selected genetic and psychosocial influences on somatic development of children. Material and Methods: The relationship between growth parameters (height, weight, and BMI) in representative population of Slovak children (11,780) of both genders in the age range 0 to 6 years (nation-wide cross-sectional anthropometric surveys in 2001) and their duration of breast-feeding, ethnicity, environmental pollution in residence, as well as somatometric characteristics (height and weight), education and occupation of their parents, and completeness of family were analyzed using statistical program S Plus 6.0. Results: Genetic influences on height of children, impact duration from breast-feeding and SE factors, father's occupation, and education of mother were confirmed. Multiple linear regression revealed significant positive association of child height with height of parents (P < 0.001), ethnicity (P < 0.001, Romanian children are the smallest in the sample), with duration of breast-feeding (P < 0.001), occupation of father (P < 0.0125), and positive association with level of mother education (P < 0.0216) (R2 = 0.849). A significant association of children weight has been found only with weight of parents (P < 0.001) and ethnicity (P < 0.0029). BMI of children has been in significant relationship with weight and BMI of parents, which confirms the influence of family lifestyle on this parameter of body composition. Factors such as environmental pollution in residence and completeness of family have not been revealed in close associations with parameters of physical development of children. Conclusions: Assessment of endogenous and exogenous factors influencing somatic development and functional indicators represents a precondition for effective primary prevention in health care of children.
