Abstract The Holy Quran contains 29 chapters (Suras) that start with disjointed letters, a phenomenon that has long been a matter of debate in Quranic exegesis. To contribute to understanding the mysterious nature of these letters, this paper examines them from a phonological and phonetic perspective. Specifically, the study compares three chapters that start with a single disjointed letter in the Holy Quran. The three chapters were analyzed at the phonemic, syllabic, and prosodic word levels. Results show that these three chapters share many features, which align with the fact that they begin with a single disjointed letter. Moreover, the two chapters that start with similar consonants, namely Sad and Qaaf, which start with an obstruent, are more similar to each other than to Chapter Nun, which begins with the sonorant /n/. These results reveal that the three letters could not have been chosen arbitrarily. This constitutes a strong case against many revisionist theories. Future research should extend the analysis to other Quranic chapters, both with and without disjointed letters, to corroborate the findings of this study.

Expansion of the Meaning and Its Influence on Exegesis of Qur’anic Texts

 • Fehmieh Nawaya + 2 more

One of the characteristics of the Arabic language is the ability to expand meaning. The study aimed to investigate the expansion of meaning and its most common methods in the Holy Qur’an and to reveal their effect on interpretation. The Qur’an was extrapolated entirely in search of expansion methods. Then the effect of this expansion on interpretation was studied with the descriptive approach. It has been shown that the Holy Qur’an is rich in the phenomenon of expansion which includes several methods; the word semantics, the morphological form of the word, the structure of speech, the letters of meanings, the revelation of the Qur’an in several readings, the precedence and the delay, the inclusion, the deletion, and the ecarts. The expansion effect was evident in the interpretation, so the Qur’anic meanings are numerous. The expansion of Qur’anic meaning is of two types. The first is a modal expansion, in which multiple meanings can be combined into one holistic sense. The second is a real expansion; several aspects of meaning are acceptable within their context; however, each can be considered individually. Hence, the language of the Qur’an expands to elicit deducers so that rulings of creatures are taken of it forever. Thus, the importance of the research is introducing new dimensions for understanding the rhetorical miracle of the Holy Qur’an.

 • Muhammad Zulqarnain

With the significant materialistic developments in 20th century, there has been observed remarkable increase in mental disorders all over the world. Meta-analysis indicated that most common among all mental disorders was Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), which has enormously affected humans globally. This research paper aimed at demonstrating the usefulness of psycho-Quranic therapy for the treatment of GAD. The paper comprised of three sections: the first looked into causes of anxiety; the second highlighted its major forms, and third provided the solution in the light of Holy Quran. Qualitative research method was used to gain an understanding of underlying phenomenon and to uncover trends in thought and behavior. The thematic review of Quranic verses reveals that Allah has used an astounding word “لا خوف” (No fear) repeatedly in Holy Quran for those who follow divine patterns of thought, beliefs and actions that they do not need to fear and grieve. Moreover, unlike psychology, Holy Quran testifies that it is exclusively possible to prevent mental disorders in general and anxiety in particular. It was also found that some of the serious anxiety disorders were mentioned in the Holy Quran including fear of abducting, killing, privation, hunger and losing wealth, etc. The Noble Quran used Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in order to deal with them and lower the level of anxiety. Psycho-Stats and demographics also endorsed Quranic scheme of treatment as it was established research that meditation and CBT had been proven much effective in lowering the anxiety level. However, CBT was considered better than that of meditation due to its long lasting effects.

 • Saifullah Bhutto

Makhdoom Muhammad Hashim Thattvi was a great scholar of the seventeenth century belonging to the Thatta city of Sindh. Thatta was the capital of Sindh at that time and was famous for its abundance of high quality Islamic institutions which produced great scholars. He wrote one hundred and sixty books in Arabic, Persian and Sindhi on all disciplines of Islamic sciences such as Quranic Exegesis, Prophetic Traditions, Islamic Jurisprudence, Arabic literature, and Islamic History etc. However, unfortunately many of his books have vanished and most of those which have survived down to us are in handwritten form. Bayaz-e-Hashmi is the most comprehensive of all his books and is probably the last one as well. It is on the subject of Fatawa. Due to it being in handwritten form, people are unaware of its existence and cannot benefit from it. Through this article we have tried to introduce this hidden scholarly work of Makhdoom Muhammad Hashim Thattvi to the academic world to provide some opportunity for publication so that it becomes available for researchers and scholars to benefit from. Visual Lip-Reading for Quranic Arabic Alphabets and Words Using Deep Learning
 • Jan 1, 2023

 • Nada Faisal Aljohani + 1 more

The continuing advances in deep learning have paved the way for several challenging ideas. One such idea is visual lip-reading, which has recently drawn many research interests. Lip-reading, often referred to as visual speech recognition, is the ability to understand and predict spoken speech based solely on lip movements without using sounds. Due to the lack of research studies on visual speech recognition for the Arabic language in general, and its absence in the Quranic research, this research aims to fill this gap. This paper introduces a new publicly available Arabic lip-reading dataset containing 10490 videos captured from multiple viewpoints and comprising data samples at the letter level (i.e., single letters (single alphabets) and Quranic disjoined letters) and in the word level based on the content and context of the book Al-Qaida Al-Noorania. This research uses visual speech recognition to recognize spoken Arabic letters (Arabic alphabets), Quranic disjoined letters, and Quranic words, mainly phonetic as they are recited in the Holy Quran according to Quranic study aid entitled Al-Qaida Al-Noorania. This study could further validate the correctness of pronunciation and, subsequently, assist people in correctly reciting Quran. Furthermore, a detailed description of the created dataset and its construction methodology is provided. This new dataset is used to train an effective pre-trained deep learning CNN model throughout transfer learning for lip-reading, achieving the accuracies of 83.3%, 80.5%, and 77.5% on words, disjoined letters, and single letters, respectively, where an extended analysis of the results is provided. Finally, the experimental outcomes, different research aspects, and dataset collection consistency and challenges are discussed and concluded with several new promising trends for future work.

Extracting Topics from the Holy Quran Using Generative Models
 • Jan 1, 2015

 • Mohammad Alhawarat

The holy Quran is one of the Holy Books of God. It is considered one of the main references for an estimated 1.6 billion of Muslims around the world. The Holy Quran language is Arabic. Specialized as well as non-specialized people in religion need to search and lookup certain information from the Holy Quran. Most research projects concentrate on the translation of the holy Quran in different languages. Nevertheless, few research projects pay attention to original text of the holy Quran in Arabic language. Keyword search is one of the Information Retrieval (IR) methods but will retrieve what is called exact search. Semantic search aims at finding deeper meanings of a text, and it is a hot field of study in Natural Language Processing (NLP). In this paper topic modeling techniques are explored to setup a framework for semantic search in the holy Quran. As the Holy Quran is the word of God, its meanings are unlimited. In this paper the words of chapter Joseph (Peace Be Upon Him (PBUH)) from the Holy Quran is analyzed based on topic modeling techniques as a case study. Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modeling technique has been applied in this paper into two structures (Hizb Quarters and verses) of Joseph chapter as: words, roots and stems. The log-Likelihood has been calculated for the two structures of the chapter. Results show that the best structure to use is verses, which gives the least energy for data. Some of the results of the attained topics are shown. These results suggest that topic modeling techniques failed to capture in an accurate manner the coherent topics of the chapter.

This study examines the impact of geographical interpretation on the differing opinions among Quranic commentators, specifically in the context of the Battles of Uhud and Al-Ahzab. The Holy Quran, rich in multi-faceted meanings, often leads to varying interpretations among scholars, especially concerning verses with geographical implications. This research focuses on how geographical context influences the understanding and preference for specific interpretations over others in these two significant battles. By analyzing the geographical elements mentioned in the Quranic verses, the study aims to provide a more precise understanding of the locations and events described, thereby resolving discrepancies in interpretations. The research is unique in its approach to incorporating modern geographical tools and digital mapping technologies to enhance the study of Quranic exegesis. Through detailed examination of the relevant verses, the study identifies the role of geographical context in shaping the historical and theological narratives of the Battles of Uhud and Al-Ahzab. The findings suggest that a deeper geographical awareness can significantly contribute to resolving interpretative conflicts and advancing the scholarly understanding of these events. This work not only underscores the importance of geographical considerations in Quranic exegesis but also opens new avenues for research that integrates traditional Islamic scholarship with contemporary geographical analysis. The study concludes with recommendations for further research in the integration of geographical data into the interpretation of other Quranic verses with similar implications.

 • Samia Muhsen Al-Jabri

Synonymy is one of the fundamental linguistic phenomena influencing the structure of lexicon. This paper examines the intricate nature of synonymy in an attempt to investigate its problematic nature in relation to translation. Types of synonyms are examined, with special emphasis paid to the translation of synonyms in the Holy Qur’an, where the translator is expected to achieve a high level of accuracy in rendering the exact meaning of the lexical items. The main focus of the study is on the translation of the near synonyms of the Arabic lexical item 'khawf' خوف)) (meaning 'fear') within the Holy Qur’an. In this comparative descriptive study, componential analysis is used to evaluate the semantic aspects of the synonymous lexical items. The meaning of each lexical item is also analyzed according to its context in the verses of the Holy Qur’an. The study is limited to three translations: those of Pickthall, Yusuf Ali and Shakir. It highlights the challenges that Qur’an translators encounter in the translation of near synonyms. It also aims to enhance the field of Qur’an translations with suggestions for achieving increased accuracy..
