Abstract

AbstractA mean‐field theory for the phase transition in solid orthohydrogen is presented. For this particular form of the field it can be shown that the order‐disorder transition has to be accompanied by a change of crystal lattice. The transition temperatures found for o‐H2 and p‐D2 are 3.44 and 4.19 K, respectively, which values have to be compared with the experimental values of 2.91 and 3.99 K, respectively.
