Abstract

The phase of zeroth order reflection of electromagnetic radiation from an echelette grating is investigated for the two characteristics polarisations at normal incidence. An exact formalism for the problem is developed, and the phases evaluated in the case of radiation wavelength much longer than the groove depth. The difference in phase between the two polarisations amounts to a difference in the equivalent position of reflection of about 20% of the groove depth. Experimental measurements at 337 μm wavelength confirm the phase difference.
