Abstract

Stamen blight of raspberry is caused by the fungus Hapalosphaeria deformans Syd., which sporulates in the anthers of the flower. The evidence indicates that in commercial plantations this pathogen overwinters as a superficial nonpenetrating mycelium within the axillary buds. Invasion of immature anthers and some of the carpels occurs during the early stages of flower bud development in late spring. Pycnidia are formed in the anthers, and sometimes on the stigmas or within the carpel loculus, and spores are discharged before the flowers open. Invasion of the carpels can result in complete failure of drupelet formation, but in some cases development of infected drupelets was apparently normal.
