Abstract

The palynology of a series of Holocene sediments from the Scheldt river basin is described. In the course of the Atlantic Period the low-lying land became water-logged and a peat began to develop. At the same time on more elevated ground a podzol developed. By comparing the palynological assemblages and incorporating data on macrofossils it is possible to reconstruct the environment in some detail. Due to edaphic factors inherent in the valley bottom situation and the limited human impact, the changes in the vegetation do not follow the classic palynological zonation. This has given rise to problems of stratigraphic correlation. Peat formation came to a close at the beginning of the Subatlantic Period and was followed by the deposition of a clay laid down in an intertidal environment.
