Abstract

ABSTRACT:This article considers subversive possibilities of World War II-era films adapted from contemporary novels featuring female characters in war-related roles. By using a novel, audiences could reference material not permissible on screen. Considering novels and films together permitted audiences to see them as supporting changes in women's roles and behavior.
