Abstract

Thallium I in liquid ammonia is oxidised to the Tl III state. Although Tl II is a probable reaction intermediate, the amounts present in equilibrium with Tl I and Tl III are undetectable. The apparent standard rate constant at −30°C for the Tl I /Tl III redox system is 3×10 −8 cm s −1 . Variations in the values of the transfer coefficient with potential are ascribed to (i) inhibition of the charge transfer process at positive potentials owing to surface oxidation, (ii) change in rate-determining step with potential, and (iii) possible adsorption of Tl I ion. Lead II is not oxidised within the electrode potential range available in liquid ammonia.
