Abstract

The de-stabilizing effects of cross-currents on otter boards as used on bottom trawls is discussed, and the need for a high angle of attack in operation is supported. The otter board is then considered as a low-aspect-ratio wing, and pertinent aero-hydrodynamic theory leading to better design criteria is examined.
