Abstract

The over-crowded text Exod. 3.13-15 is examined and v. 14 identified as an interpolation derived from Hos. 1.9. As part of the emerging covenant theology associated with Hosea, the prophet created a pun on the divine name to signify termination of Israel's election. In their revision of the Sinai narrative, the Proto-Deuteronomists introduced v. 14 into Exod. 3.13-15 to indicate that even though judgment had fallen on the Northern Kingdom, Yahweh was still 'ehyeh to Judah, if the covenant as set out in Exod. 19-24, 32-34 was maintained.
