We use a new approach to characterize the absorption characteristics of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in standard solutions and in several tropical lake ecosystems (Lake Victoria, Lake Tanganyika, Laguna Ibera). Compared with the common methods where a single slope of CDOM absorption spectrum is determined over a broad spectral region, we estimate the variations in spectral slope as a function of wavelength from 200 to 700 nm. Hence, our results show a distribution of spectral slope, referred to as the spectral slope curve, Sλ, which was used to identify similarities between lakes and standard solutions as well as to show the wavelength intervals in which photodegradation modifies spectral slope. In contrast to the plethora of wavelength intervals and ratios presented in the CDOM literature, a comparison of spectral slope curves between ecosystems provides a potentially important tool to examine the characteristics of CDOM in a consistent manner.

Sensitivity analysis of CDOM spectral slope in artificial and natural samples: an application in the central eastern Mediterranean Basin

In the past two decades, optical properties of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in marine environments have been extensively studied. Many of these studies report CDOM properties for the offshore environment where this complex mixture of optically active compounds is strongly diluted. Nevertheless, autochthonous and allochthonous sources have been identified and sinks related to photodegradation and bacterial activity have been demonstrated. The calculation of the spectral slope of the CDOM absorption curve has been proven to be useful and is often reported. However, a rigorous uncertainty analysis of the slope calculation is rarely reported. In this paper, we propose a method to evaluate the uncertainty of CDOM spectral slope calculated between 270 and 400 nm, using both naturally sampled and artificial solutions. We use these results to study the ultra-oligotrophic waters of the Mediterranean Sea (central eastern basin), where little is known about CDOM spatial distribution. We show that dilutions of both artificial and natural samples produce a Gaussian distribution of spectral slopes, indicating that consistent values may be determined, with a typical uncertainty of ±0.0004 nm−1 when absorption at 300 nm was greater then 0.1 m−1 (0.1 m pathlength). Comparing the distribution of spectral slopes from central eastern basin samples to a Gaussian distribution, we show differences between measurements that were significantly different. These values allow us to distinguish possible sources (algal derived CDOM), sinks (e.g. photo-bleaching) at different depths. We propose a subdivision of CDOM compounds into refractory and semilabile/refractory pools and evaluate the CDOM spectral slope of algal derived CDOM released at or near deep chlorophyll maximum.

Additional spectra of asteroid 1996 FG3, backup target of the ESAMarcoPolo-Rmission

Near-Earth binary asteroid (175706) 1996 FG3 is the current backup target of the ESA MarcoPolo-R mission, selected for the study phase of ESA M3 missions. It is a primitive (C-type) asteroid that shows significant variation in its visible and near-infrared spectra. Here we present new spectra of 1996 FG3 and we compare our new data with other published spectra, analysing the variation in the spectral slope. The asteroid will not be observable again over the next three years at least. We obtained the spectra using DOLORES and NICS instruments at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG), a 3.6m telescope located at El Roque de los Muchachos Observatory in La Palma, Spain. To compare with other published spectra of the asteroid, we computed the spectral slope S', and studied any plausible correlation of this quantity with the phase angle (alpha). In the case of visible spectra, we find a variation in spectral slope of Delta S' = 0.15 +- 0.10 %/10^3 A/degree for 3 < alpha < 18 degrees, in good agreement with the values found in the literature for the phase reddening effect. In the case of the near-infrared, we find a variation in the slope of Delta S' = 0.04 +- 0.08 %/10^3 A/degree for 6 < alpha < 51 degrees. Our computed variation in S' agrees with the only two values found in the literature for the phase reddening in the near-infrared. The variation in the spectral slope of asteroid 1996 FG3 shows a trend with the phase angle at the time of the observations, both in the visible and the near-infrared. It is worth noting that, to fully explain this spectral variability we should take into account other factors, like the position of the secondary component of the binary asteroid 1999 FG3 with respect to the primary, or the spin axis orientation at the time of the observations. More data are necessary for an analysis of this kind.

Water color component analysis in saltwater intrusion reach: a case study in Shawan-Humen Watercourse, Pearl River Estuary

The saline water color component characteristic (chlorophyll-a and chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM)) and their spatial change tendency in the Pearl River Estuary from the In-situ data in December of 2006 was studied. Based on the experimental results, the mixing behavior of CDOM in the Shawan-Humen Watercourse was analyzed. The mixing behavior was controlled by topography, hydrological and biological factors, and the relationships among absorption characteristics of CDOM (at 400 nm, ag400). Contained is a discussion of chlorophyll-a concentration and salinity. The chlorophyll-a concentration decreases with increasing CDOM absorption under a salinity of 10, while the chlorophyll-a concentration decreases with increasing salinity. The salinity becomes less aggressive towards the Lingding Bay in the saltwater intrusion reach of Shawan-Humen, and a low chlorophyll-a concentration area occurs in the Shiziyang riverway where the salinity is greater than 20. The highest chlorophyll-a concentration of surface water was observed in the Dadaoshawei site of the Shawan tributary reach- where the saltwater and freshwater interface. The slope distribution of the CDOM spectral absorption curve in the Shawan-Humen watercourse was increased towards the Lingding Bay direction. The spectral slope S value of CDOM varied from 0.0107 to 0.0121 nm- 1 with an average value of 0.0116 nm- 1 . This was an indication that the terrestrial river input was the main resource of CDOM in the Shawan-Humen watercourse. The high correlation (R 2 =0.9458)of surface water and bottom water (-7.5m ) salinity showed that salinity can be monitored by remote sensing. The ag400 in the saltwater intrusion reach showed conservative behavior, indicating strong characteristics of the CDOM it reflected. There was a correlative relationship between ag400, chlorophyll-a concentration and the salinity, showing that a water color analysis technique can be used to study the distribution and behavior of salinity, as well as saltwater intrusion to a certain extent.

Spectral characterization of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in a fjord (Doubtful Sound, New Zealand)
  • Jul 17, 2008

  • Michael Gonsior + 6 more

Doubtful Sound, Fiordland National Park, New Zealand has a stable low salinity layer (LSL) at the surface due to the high annual rainfall and an additional freshwater input from the discharge of a hydroelectric power plant. Chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) distribution dynamics in this LSL were analyzed using Excitation Emission Matrix (EEM) fluorescence and UV/Vis absorption measurements. The levels of CDOM in surface water in Doubtful Sound were much higher than previously reported for coastal zones. CDOM analyzed by UV/Vis absorbance and EEM fluorescence decreased by about 90% within the first 5 m depth. In the first 5 m, the salinity gradient was extreme (5 – 34 salinity), creating a vertical mixing gradient, which appeared to be stable over time. The spectral slope S and the fluorescence index increased during vertical mixing within the first 5 m depth indicating changes in the CDOM chromophores. Observations during a strong rain event revealed that CDOM in a freshwater stream initially increased, but decreased with additional rain (same flow rate), which is an indication that most CDOM was quickly exported within these catchments. Furthermore, the lower CDOM input after substantial rain diluted the surface CDOM level and created a subsurface CDOM maximum. However, shortly after the rain event (<24 h) the surface CDOM maximum with a steady decrease with depth was restored. The combination of extreme rainfall, pristine temperate rain forest and steep mountains with distinct watersheds creates a highly dynamic environment with very high terrestrial CDOM input. These CDOM dynamics and the high degree of scatter in the linear correlations between CDOM levels and salinity cannot be explained solely in terms of conservative mixing, but suggest that biophysical controls in the catchments and mixing with marine derived CDOM are involved in the dynamics of CDOM in this system.

Changes in optical characteristics of surface microlayers hint to photochemically and microbially mediated DOM turnover in the upwelling region off the coast of Peru

Abstract. The coastal upwelling system off the coast of Peru is characterized by high biological activity and a pronounced subsurface oxygen minimum zone, as well as associated emissions of atmospheric trace gases such as N2O, CH4 and CO2. From 3 to 23 December 2012, R/V Meteor (M91) cruise took place in the Peruvian upwelling system between 4.59 and 15.4° S, and 82.0 to 77.5° W. During M91 we investigated the composition of the sea-surface microlayer (SML), the oceanic uppermost boundary directly subject to high solar radiation, often enriched in specific organic compounds of biological origin like chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and marine gels. In the SML, the continuous photochemical and microbial recycling of organic matter may strongly influence gas exchange between marine systems and the atmosphere. We analyzed SML and underlying water (ULW) samples at 38 stations focusing on CDOM spectral characteristics as indicator of photochemical and microbial alteration processes. CDOM composition was characterized by spectral slope (S) values and excitation–emission matrix fluorescence (EEMs), which allow us to track changes in molecular weight (MW) of DOM, and to determine potential DOM sources and sinks. Spectral slope S varied between 0.012 to 0.043 nm−1 and was quite similar between SML and ULW, with no significant differences between the two compartments. Higher S values were observed in the ULW of the southern stations below 15° S. By EEMs, we identified five fluorescent components (F1–5) of the CDOM pool, of which two had excitation/emission characteristics of amino-acid-like fluorophores (F1, F4) and were highly enriched in the SML, with a median ratio SML : ULW of 1.5 for both fluorophores. In the study region, values for CDOM absorption ranged from 0.07 to 1.47 m−1. CDOM was generally highly concentrated in the SML, with a median enrichment with respect to the ULW of 1.2. CDOM composition and changes in spectral slope properties suggested a local microbial release of DOM directly in the SML as a response to light exposure in this extreme environment. In a conceptual model of the sources and modifications of optically active DOM in the SML and underlying seawater (ULW), we describe processes we think may take place (Fig. 1); the production of CDOM of higher MW by microbial release through growth, exudation and lysis in the euphotic zone, includes the identified fluorophores (F1, F2, F3, F4, F5). Specific amino-acid-like fluorophores (F1, F4) accumulate in the SML with respect to the ULW, as photochemistry may enhance microbial CDOM release by (a) photoprotection mechanisms and (b) cell-lysis processes. Microbial and photochemical degradation are potential sinks of the amino-acid-like fluorophores (F1, F4), and potential sources of reworked and more refractory humic-like components (F2, F3, F5). In the highly productive upwelling region along the Peruvian coast, the interplay of microbial and photochemical processes controls the enrichment of amino-acid-like CDOM in the SML. We discuss potential implications for air–sea gas exchange in this area.
