Abstract
The Okanagan Basin Study and the subsequent Implementation Agreement provide a practical example of integrated water resource planning in British Columbia. The Study was undertaken because of increasing development in the basin and increasing pressures on the available quantity and quality of water. The Comprehensive Framework Plan resulting from the Study provides for the development and management of the basin’s water resource for the social and economic betterment of the Okanagan community to the year 2020. The Plan is comprised of recommendations for each of the major water resource components: water quantity, water quality, fisheries and water based recreation. Both the Study and the Implementation Agreement represent a relatively new approach to water management, bringing together the combined skills of many experts in different fields of study, while attempting to include the views and values of valley residents.
