Abstract
This article supports Page's identification of Artemis Orthia as the goddess of Alcman s Partheneion by reading the poem as a companion piece to the ritual endurance contest before Orthia's altar wherein the maidens express solidarity with the young men about to undergo this final test of the agoge.
