Abstract

Abstract The Russian-language newspaper Kavkaz, founded in 1846, began covering events in Iran in the mid-nineteenth century. The newspaper not only made it possible for its readers to get acquainted with life in Iran, but also provided detailed descriptions of the systems of administrative, religious, and military governance in Qajar Iran. The newspaper frequently published pieces about Iran's armed forces, military reforms, and the activities of foreign military instructors in Iran. Adolf Petrovich Berzhe (1828–86) left a deep impression on the development of historiography and archaeology in the fields of Caucasian and Oriental studies. Berzhe's published work in Kavkaz provides a comprehensive picture of the administrative apparatus of Qajar Iran, which is an invaluable source of information for the contemporary researcher of Qajar Iran.
