Abstract

As the process of urbanization continues unabated new and emerging socio-economic trends will present both new challenges and opportunities for not only the residents of urban areas but also for those who govern them, plan for them, and research them. In this introductory article we provide a discussion of some of the trends that will impact urban areas in the future and as well as a synthesis of the seven papers that contribute to this special issue of Applied Geography. The urban experts, whose insights we draw upon, present a thoughtful and thought provoking look at the challenges and opportunities ahead.
