Abstract

Six hundred newborn babies were examined by the author in the first 4 days of life. 77% were at term, 6% postmature and 17% premature. The biceps reflex was obtained in 89%, triceps jerk in 85%, supinator jerk in 87%, knee and ankle jerks in 99%. A flexor plantar response with lateral plantar stimulation occurred in 2.8% of babies, in 2 of whom the response appeared indicative of pathological change. An increase in the frequency of elicitation of the abdominal reflexes occurred when these reflexes were tested immediately after the initial inspection and not during the course of the routine examination. Tonal fluctuation is seen after the first 6 h of life, usually mild in degree, but it may be more pronounced and then probably represents a delay of the post partum transition period. Comparison between the head and chest circumferences may provide an additional means of differentiating dysmaturity from prematurity.
