Abstract
As described in a previous letter, scientific research, as well as most other research activity in Holland, is concentrated at the public universities. Student fees defray part of the expenses of these universities but at least three quarters of their expenses are met from public funds. These funds are allocated by Parliament on the proposal of the Minister of Education and, in the case of the Municipal University of Amsterdam, by the City Council on the proposal of the alderman concerned. Of course the Minister of Education and the alderman depend on the advice of the university authorities on details, and this advice is usually followed.
