Abstract

In the previous article, “Internal locus of control and social support associated with some dietary changes by elderly participants in a diet intervention trial,” the authors note that dietary change is an important component of medical treatment for many chronic health conditions. For the elderly, especially, diet and other significant changes in lifestyle must be attempted, more often than not, in the context of polypharmacy, co-morbidities and social and psychological factors related to age. “Two psycho-social factors,” the authors state, “locus of control and social support, have received attention in numerous studies as potential modifiers of lifestyle change.” This study sets out to determine to what extent these factors have in the development of diets among the elderly. Using Polyp Prevention Trials (PPT), Multidimensional Health Locus of Control (MHLC) and Norbeck Social Support Questionnaires (NSSQ), the authors measured the daily dietary intakes of the elderly over a period of one year and compared the results to the baseline values.
