Abstract

We analyse carefully the nature of the physical states in the dual-resonance model. We argue that the explicitk-dependence of the DDF states requires that they should not be identified with the physical states. The operatorτ(k) of Brink and Olive is a projection operator onto the DDF states, which are not a covariant representation of the physical states. We show under what conditionsτ(k) may be used as a covariant physical-state projection operator on shell. We use our results to show that the dual-resonance model has no covariant continuation off shell which retains the spectrum of the physical states.
