Abstract
Mustata et al demonstrate in this issue of EMBO reports that Lgr4 expression in the stem cells and transit amplifying cells of the intestinal crypts is required for the establishment of the stem cell niche and also for the maintenance of intestinal stem cells in ex vivo organoid cultures.
