Abstract

During an orientative oceanographic survey in 1955–56 of the Hardangerfjord area, southwest Norway, samples for quantitative phytoplankton studies were collected in sections from offshore coastal waters to the inner fjord branch, Eidfjorden, covering a whole year. The present first report deals with the quantitative phytoplankton distribution at various seasons. A pronounced “fjord effect”upon the annual phytoplankton cycle is described. Subsequent reports will discuss the background for the differences between the phytoplankton of the fjord and that of the offshore coastal waters of the area.
