Abstract Traces the evolution of the swashbuckler musical idiom in The Pirates of Penzance and examines some musical faces of pirate camp from the early sound era. In The Pirate, the governing camp sensibility of director Minnelli manages the interplay of multiple camp sensibilities, several specifically musical.
