Abstract

The molar volume of molten As–Sb, As–Bi and As–Te systems up to 70 at.% As has been measured at every 10 at.% with a gamma-ray attenuation method. For the first two systems, the temperature dependence of the molar volume decreases with increasing As fraction and becomes smallest at 70 at.% of As. For As–Te system the contraction of volume and consequently a negative minimum in the thermal expansion coefficient were observed for all the alloys investigated. By extrapolating the present data, the volume of supercooled As has been estimated. The results indicate that the volume of As increases as supercooling proceeds as observed in liquid Te.
