Abstract

At the opening session of the International Federation for Information and Documentation (FID) 48th Conference held in Graz, Austria in October 1996, President Ritva T. Launo noted that, as FID closed its two year celebration of its hundredth anniversary, Austria was celebrating its thousandth. This centennial atmosphere seems an appropriate place to look forward to the millennium. President Launo invited delegates to decide what they would drive on the information superhighway — the sports car that speeds ahead; the family saloon that goes with the main traffic flow; or the furniture van filled with information products. She pointed out that, regardless of vehicle choice, it would be necessary to fasten seat belts as the ride would certainly be bumpy!
