Abstract

The medieval Old French exemplum Del Tumbeor Nostre Dame (Our Lady's Tumbler) tells the story of a minstrel who performed acrobatic dance in a monastery, dedicating his dances to God and the Virgin Mary. This article situates Del Tumbeor Nostre Dame in the context of other medieval accounts of sacred performances, particularly those of female mystics, in order to consider the roles that gender, power, mediation, and audience played in both the creation of these performances and their recording and dissemination.
