The Middle School Achievement Gap Before and After COVID-19 in Urban and Rural Areas

Abstract

본 연구는 코로나19 상황에서 강원도 학생들의 교육격차 상황을 실증적으로 살펴보고 그 격차 양상을 밝히고자 하였다. 이를 위해 강원도 소재 중학교 157개교의 학업성취등급 자료를 바탕으로‘학업성취등급 비율 변화량’과‘중위권 비율’을 산출하였다. 특히, 지역규모와 학교 대면 등교일수에 따라 교육격차의 차이가 발생했는지에 초점을 두었다. 분석은 SPSS 21.0을 활용하여 기술통계 및 집단 간 차이검증을 적용하였으며, 분석결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 코로나19 이후 강원도 지역은 학교 내 상위권(A등급) 비율은 감소하고 하위권(E등급)은 증가하면서 학력 하향 추세를 나타냈다. 중위권 비율에 있어서는 수학과 영어교과의 경우 그 차이가 유의하지 않았으나 국어교과는 관심 시점(2019년-2020년)에서 학교 내 중위권 비율이 코로나19 이후 유의하게 감소한 것으로 밝혀졌다. 둘째, 강원도 내 읍·면지역의 중위권 비율이 도시지역보다 높게 나타났으며 도시지역에서는 코로나19 이후 E등급이 크게 증가하였다. 셋째, 코로나19 발생 후 원격교육이 병행됨에 따라 등교일수에 따른 학력격차를 살펴본 결과, 대면 등교일수가 많은 학교들은 대체로 하위권 증가 비율은 적고 중위권 비율은 높게 나타나면서 긍정적으로 나타났다. 위와 같은 분석결과를 바탕으로 교육격차 감소를 위한 정책적 방향을 제시하였다.This study is meant to identify the achievement gap of students attending middle school before and after COVID-19 in Kangwon province and to examine discrepancies between the schools in urban and in rural areas. The data is from 2018 to 2020, the achievement distribution is of the 157 middle schools in Kangwon province. It was collected and processed into the indicators of this study. It is open to the public on a scale from (A) to (E) in percentage terms. Two indicators, one expressed as an increase or decrease in percentage before and after COVID-19 and the rate of the intermediate students ranging from (B) to (D), were calculated accordingly. The findings are as follows. The rate of the highest (A) decreased and the lowest (E) increased after COVID-19 in Kangwon province. The rates of the intermediate level in Korean literature decreased during the period of 2019 to 2020, while the change in Mathematics and English was not statistically significant. The rates of the intermediate level in rural areas were higher than that in urban areas. The rates of the (E) in urban areas increased remarkably after COVID-19. After COVID-19, the rate of the (E) is lower and the rate of the intermediate is higher in students who attended more classes in person than online.
