Abstract

According to a current brochure, the residential marriage and family therapy training program at the Menninger Foundation in Topeka, Kansas first began operation in 1972. An examination of descriptive literature about the present training program, and of a variety of short-term workshops which are focused on more specialized facets of the subject, plus an on-site observation of the available facilities is very impressive. The administrators responsible for the program's development deserve recognition for a job well done. It is likely, however, that some of the credit for the current successful program belongs to some pioneers of an earlier era. While those early efforts may not have ended so successfully, they may well have helped to pave the way for today's program. The Foundation's archives indicate that a training program in marital therapy extended back to the early 1950's.
