Abstract

The ‘May Fourth Spirit’ (MFS) has always been an integral part of the discourse on the May Fourth Movement (MFM), especially in the Communist Party of China’s (CPC) narrative of the MFM and its own origins. The need to carry forward the MFS is prominently emphasised in various speeches and writings of the party leadership delivered on the MFM anniversary every year; in fact, no speech delivered by a party leader is complete sans such an emphasis. The twentieth anniversary of the MFM in 1939 was a defining moment in the evolution of the relationship between the MFM, the MFS, and the CPC. And it was none other than Mao Zedong himself who affirmed the umbilical status of the MFM for the CPC in its ideological canon by defining it as an unprecedented revolutionary movement that also led to the birth of the CPC.
