Abstract

The purpose of this paper is the legend of the Jewess Miriai. Various mandaean texts contain traditions about Miria, a young woman who converts from Judaism to Mandaeism. Her name indicates that she is Jesus' mother, but her association with him is absent in the accounts that portray her as a positive figure. The A. explores Miriai's appearances in Mandaeism, and to deal with the problem: why does she occur in this religion at all? For Mandaeism is a Gnostic system allegedly without Christian roots
