Abstract

The paper addresses the origin and the magnitude of the Magnus force (a nondissipative force on a vortex transverse to its velocity), as well as its application to vortex dynamics. The total transverse force on the vortex consists of: (i) the superfluid Magnus force proportional to the superfluid density; (ii) the transverse force from quasiparticles due to the Aharonov-Bohm effect; (iii) the transverse force from the external fields breaking Galilean invariance, e.g., from impurities. Symmetry analysis shows that in the classical Josephson junction array the total transverse force vanishes. The effect of the Magnus force on the acoustic Faraday effect and the microwave magnetoabsorption resonances in clean single crystals is considered.
