Abstract

The personal stories of mental breakdown (the author’s terminology) and recovery contained in this collection are at once compelling, thought- provoking, and moving, and it is difficult to put the book down. While each story is unique, common themes abound, such as unhelpful healthcare professionals; poor interprofessional communication; the inappropriateness of the ‘medical model’, and in particular, diagnosis; the over-use and sometimes indiscriminate prescription of psychoactive medication; and the adverse consequences of labelling. Having been a mental health practitioner through the 1970s and 1980s, some of the stories made for uncomfortable reading, as I recognised regimes that were experienced as anything but thera-peutic, and in some cases abusive, by service users of the time. I hope that lessons have been learned, and will continue to be learned, from reading such accounts.
