Abstract

A review of the physical factors that are used to compute the dose in rads at points around linear radium sources has included a consideration of the gamma-ray absorption in the radioactive source and the container, the effect of cellularity in the source construction, and the effective absorption coefficients for use with the Sievert integral. The effective attenuation in tissue of the gamma rays of gold 198, iridium 192, cesium 137, radium 226, and cobalt 60 have been considered. In addition, new tables based upon recent experimental data are given for the radiation dose around linear radium sources.
