Abstract

Synopsis A calorimetric determination of the specific heats of polycrystalline potassium aluminium alum and ammonium aluminium alum has been made in the temperature regions from 1.1 to 4.2°K and 14 to 20°K. The experimental results in the liquid helium temperature range have been represented by c p = 3.35 × 10 −3 T 3 J/mole-deg and c p = 3.18 × 10 −3 T 3 J/mole-deg respectively for the two alums. The Debye characteristic temperature computed for KA1 alum is 83.4°K and that for NH 4 Al alum is 84.9°K. The observed deviations from the Debye formula of the heat capacities of a series of alums have been discussed.
