Abstract

The two objects dealt with here were excavated nearly fifty years ago (1930) by the late W. F. Albright in Level C at Tell Beit Mirsim. Since 1938, both the lion (reg. no. 1.9014) and the libation tray (reg. no. 1.8987) have been on display in the South Gallery of the Rockefeller Museum. While Albright (1938: 65-68, pls. 23-24 and 52; 1943: pls. 23; and two letters of the spring of 1969 which are quoted below) dated these objects to the Late Bronze Age, the purpose of our renewed interest in and discussion of them is to show that their culturalartistic milieu is the first millennium B.C. and not that of the late Canaanite world.
