Abstract

The hypothesis which separates "good" from "evil" is unhelpful when trying to understand why people harm one another. It is too easy to think of those who do grave harm to others as different from us, but the truth is that reasonable people will act irrationally and peaceful people act violently when their sense of self and family are threatened. Hearing stories of "the other" is a way of blending fear into understanding.
