Abstract

George Gibbs, before the age of 25, produced publications substantially contributing to American legal bibliography, and then went on to become a western explorer, geologist, and distinguished student of Native American ethnology.His career displays the versatility that characterized nineteenth century Americans and suggests, perhaps, the value of legal bibliographical skills in very different disciplines.
