Abstract

Melanotrichia serica sp. n. from Hong Kong belongs to the M. chichupala‐group, and is shown to be closely related to the two other Chinese species in the genus. The Japanese genus Tsukushitrichia is synonymized with Melanotrichia, and Kibuneopsychomyia tanzawaensis Kobayashi is transferred to Melanotrichia. The presumed larva of M. serica, from a forest stream, is very similar to those of Xiphocentron and Abaria thus confirming the larval characteristics of the family. As well as the morphological description, observations are made on the tube structure and feeding habits of the larva, and on the head capsule width of the five larval instars. This is the first larval description of an oriental xiphocentronid, and of the genus Melanotrichia.
