Abstract

The kinetics and vapor-solid equilibria of the platinum-chlorine system have been studied between 470° and 880°C at chlorine pressures of 152–760 torr. Three kinetic regions, differentiated by separate controlling mechanisms, were found. Correlations were made between the kinetic factors and equilibria involving 1. (1) the vapor pressure of Pt 6Cl 12, 2. (2) chlorine and Pt 6Cl 12 vapor in equilibrium with platinum, 3. (3) chlorine and Pt 3Cl 3 vapor over platinum.
