The Kamion interphase as a warm climatic oscillation during the Plenivistulian/Late Vistulian transition
In the stratigraphic scheme of the late Plenivistulian and early Late Vistulian on the territory of Poland, the Bölling interphase is recognised as the first warming. However, there is some evidence collected at different research sites that points to an earlier warm oscillation. It has been termed Kamion, after the site where biogenic sediments deposited about 18,000 to 16,800 cal BP were first documented. The aim of this paper is to present other such sites in Poland and to discuss the potential evidence for this warming in global paleoclimatic data.

Simple SummaryOver the centuries of coexistence between humans and dogs, both the appearance of our four-legged companions and their social perception have changed. This article aims at identifying the most probable morphological and functional types of dogs found in Poland in the period from the 10th to the first half of the 13th century. The authors will also try to address the issue of how dogs were treated in the early Middle Ages and what social and economic roles these animals played. These considerations are based on the remains of several dozen dogs discovered in the medieval Wroclaw stronghold, one of the most important centres in Poland at the time. We will use finds from other archaeological sites in Poland and written sources concerning this part of Europe. It has been proven that specific “breeds” of dogs were found in this area. Their appearance and size were probably related to the specific function of the quadrupeds. Dogs were treated very differently in the early Middle Ages: Both as a companion for the elite, and as a source of skins, bones, and even meat.This article pertains to the issue of early medieval dogs (10th–mid-13th century) from the territory of Poland and Central Europe. The study is based on dog remains from the Wroclaw Cathedral Island (Ostrów Tumski), one of the most important administrative centres of early medieval Poland, the capital of a secular principality and the seat of diocese authorities. The main morphological and functional types of dogs living in Wroclaw and other parts of Poland were characterized on that basis. It has been concluded that the roles and perceptions of dogs were very ambiguous. On the one hand, they were hunting companionship for the elite and were considered a symbol of devotion and loyalty. On the other hand, dogs symbolised disgrace. In everyday life, these animals were sometimes abused, their skin was sometimes tanned and their bones modified into tools, and in exceptional cases, dogs were even eaten.

This paper describes PROMOTE, which is one of the currently running research projects evaluating and implementing Environmental Technology Verification (ETV). It is funded by the European Union in the 7th Framework Program. An ETV certificate guarantees that new equipment or innovative technology corresponds to the producer’s description of advantages and simultaneously responds to the environmental requirements of EU experts. ETV-SGS (Soil-Groundwater Systems) has to answer several logical requirements to be useful and understandable. The general rules of system operation are compliant with the PRINCE2 methodology applied in many countries. This involves laboratory and field test stages. In the PROMOTE project the research site in Poland was chosen for field tests of innovative measurements and monitoring technology. The site was located at the Old Gasworks in Bydgoszcz whose terrain is strongly contaminated. The area is recognized and documented with contamination by organic compounds of ground and groundwater – vestiges of 140 years of gas production from coal – hence became for PROMOTE project purposes and the ETV system an ideal research site. Despite the number of years since the site has been used, tests conducted in cooperation with the Municipality of Bydgoszcz and the land owner i.e. Pomorska Spolka Gazownictwa, confirmed the longevity of pollutants and the high risk assessment for the ground and groundwater environment. The results obtained are all the more credible as the innovative technology tests were verified with classical methods and simultaneous analysis in three different, independent European laboratories in Stuttgart, Barcelona and Warsaw.

Abstract. Lake Ohrid (Macedonia and Albania) is a rare example of a deep, ancient Mediterranean lake and is a key site for palaeoclimate research in the northeastern Mediterranean region. This study conducts the analysis of diatoms as a proxy for Lateglacial and Holocene climate and environmental change in Lake Ohrid at a higher resolution than in previous studies. While Lake Ohrid has the potential to be sensitive to water temperature change, the data demonstrate a highly complex diatom response, probably comprising a direct response to temperature-induced lake productivity in some phases and an indirect response to temperature-related lake stratification or mixing and epilimnetic nutrient availability in others. The data also demonstrate the possible influence of physical limnological (e.g. the influence of wind stress on stratification or mixing) and chemical processes (e.g. the influence of catchment dynamics on nutrient input) in mediating the complex response of diatoms. During the Lateglacial (ca. 12 300–11 800 cal yr BP), the low-diversity dominance of hypolimnetic Cyclotella fottii indicates low lake productivity, linked to low water temperature. Although the subsequent slight increase in small, epilimnetic C. minuscula during the earliest Holocene (ca. 11 800–10 600 cal yr BP) suggests climate warming and enhanced stratification, diatom concentration remains as low as during the Lateglacial, suggesting that water temperature increase was muted across this major transition. The early Holocene (ca. 10 600–8200 cal yr BP) is characterised by a sustained increase in epilimnetic taxa, with mesotrophic C. ocellata indicating high water-temperature-induced productivity between ca. 10 600–10 200 cal yr BP and between ca. 9500–8200 cal yr BP and with C. minuscula in response to low nutrient availability in the epilimnion between ca. 10 200–9500 cal yr BP. During the middle Holocene (ca. 8200–2600 cal yr BP), when sedimentological and geochemical proxies provide evidence for maximum Holocene water temperature, anomalously low C. ocellata abundance is probably a response to epilimnetic nutrient limitation, almost mimicking the Lateglacial flora apart from the occurrence of mesotrophic Stephanodiscus transylvanicus in the hypolimnion. During the late Holocene (ca. 2600 cal yr BP–present), high abundance and fluctuating composition of epilimnetic taxa are probably a response more to enhanced anthropogenic nutrient input, particularly nitrogen enrichment, than to climate. Overall, the data indicate that previous assumptions concerning the linearity of diatom response in this deep, ancient lake are invalid, and multi-proxy analysis is essential to improve understanding of palaeolimnological dynamics in future research on the long, Quaternary sequence.

ABSTRACTTerrestrial environments tend to be characterized by an incomplete record of past conditions. For the MIS 3–2 periods, there is only one known site in Poland—Horoszki Duże—in which a probably continuous record of climate change has been preserved. However, this site does not have any high precision multi-proxy analyses. In the absence of continuous high-resolution records, we decided to gather and analyze scattered information. We assembled data originating from various sites in Poland and checked whether the available results of 14C and luminescence dating presented in the form of probability density distributions (PDF) and kernel density estimation (KDE) models would allow their reinterpretation. The data were compared to the Greenland isotope curve to see whether they were consistent with the hypothesis that the number of “warming-cooling” cycles recorded in the examined sediments was of the same order as in those ice-core records. Previously in Poland, usually only two interstadial periods (i.e., Hengelo and Denekamp, 36–38.6 and 28–32 14C kBP, respectively) have been identified in the discussed period. The joint analysis of data from a larger area revealed more warming-cooling events than recorded from individual sites.

Abstract. A high-resolution pollen record from Lago Trifoglietti in Calabria (southern Italy) provides new insights into the paleoenvironmental and palaeoclimatic changes which characterise the Holocene period in the southern Italy. The chronology is based on 11 AMS radiocarbon dates from terrestrial organic material. The Holocene history of the vegetation cover shows the persistence of an important and relatively stable Fagus forest present over that entire period, offering a rare example of a beech woodstand able to withstand climate changes for more than 11 000 yr. Probably in relation with early Holocene dry climate conditions which affected southern Italy, the Trifoglietti pollen record supports a southward delay in thermophyllous forest expansion dated to ca. 13 500 cal BP at Monticchio, ca. 11 000 cal BP at Trifoglietti, and finally ca. 9800 cal BP in Sicily. Regarding the human impact history, the Trifoglietti pollen record shows only poor imprints of agricultural activities and anthopogenic indicators, apart from those indicating pastoralism activities beneath forest cover. The selective exploitation of Abies appears to have been the strongest human impact on the Trifoglietti surroundings. On the basis of (1) a specific ratio between hygrophilous and terrestrial taxa, and (2) the Modern Analogue Technique, the pollen data collected at Lago Trifoglietti led to the establishment of two palaeoclimatic records tracing changes in (1) lake depth and (2) annual precipitation. On a millennial scale, these records give evidence of increasing moisture from ca. 11 000 to ca. 9400 cal BP and maximum humidity from ca. 9400 to ca. 6200 cal BP, prior to a general trend towards the drier climate conditions that have prevailed up to the present. In addition, several successive centennial-scale oscillations appear to have punctuated the entire Holocene. The identification of a cold dry event around 11 300 cal BP, responsible for a marked decline in timberline altitude and possibly equivalent to the PBO, remains to be confirmed by further investigations verifying both chronology and magnitude. Two cold and possibly drier Boreal oscillations developed at ca. 9800 and 9200 cal BP. At Trifoglietti, the 8.2 kyr event corresponds to the onset of cooler and drier climatic conditions which persisted until ca. 7500 cal BP. Finally, the second half of the Holocene was characterised by dry phases at ca. 6100–5200, 4400–3500, and 2500–1800 cal BP, alternating with more humid phases at ca. 5200–4400 and ca. 3500–2500 cal BP. Considered as a whole, these millennial-scale trends and centennial-scale climatic oscillations support contrasting patterns of palaeohydrological changes recognised between the north- and south-central Mediterranean.

The Holocene vegetation dynamics of the Eurasian steppe are underinvestigated despite its vast extension, chiefly because of the scarcity of suitable sites for palaeoecological research. Here, we present a palaeoecological reinvestigation from Kardashynskyi mire (southern Ukraine), approximately 4 km from a previously cored site. Using pollen, spores and microscopic charcoal, we have reconstructed vegetation dynamics, fire history and land use for the past c. 8300 years. Regionally, steppe vegetation with Poaceae, Chenopodiaceae and Artemisia was always dominant. However, pollen assemblages also reflect the presence of floodplain and upland tree stands. At the beginning of the sequence, c. 8300 years ago, Pinus stands were growing on the sandy terraces of the Dnipro dry upland sites. Later, at c. 7950 cal yr BP, diverse stands with Quercus, Ulmus, Fraxinus, Tilia and Alnus established along the riverbanks, where moisture availability was sufficient. Around 6100 cal yr BP, those deciduous broadleaved stands experienced a severe decline, likely in response to changing water table levels. Cultural indicators suggest land use activities after c. 7900 cal yr BP. During the Bronze Age, human impact intensified. Overall, both climate and humans drove vegetation dynamics in the Pontic steppe for millennia. Nowadays, this once extensive biome has almost completely been converted to cropland. Similarly, the wetland vegetation, the riparian forests and, above all, the pine forests growing on the sandy terraces were strongly reduced by millennial-long land use. Under the current conditions, even the last remnants of these special vegetation types are severely threatened.
