Abstract
THE history of human endeavor records numerous careers of physicians who have left the fields of Aesculapius to become statesmen, presidents of universities, explorers, or to follow exotic pursuits which have seldom led them back (apart from broad humanitarian concern) to their original interest in the cure or prevention of disease. Other physicians have demonstrated organizational ability and financial acumen, but rarely of an order leading to the development of a major corporate enterprise. It has been the good fortune of our specialty both to have fostered the early career of such an exceptional individual and to have seen him bring both his talents and his resources to bear in behalf of those whom he originally undertook to serve.
