Abstract

The life and times of Walter Phillimore has been lost to the pages of history despite the enormous contribution he made to the development of comparative and international law. This should not have been the case as Walter Phillimore, the third in a generation of jurists was a man of conviction and dedication to the evolution of law. His dedication spanned various areas of legal thought and practice, such as admiralty law, conflicts of law, canon law, international law, and English law both in the domestic and more broadly the British Empire. This contribution only offers a very short and useful biographical note on Lord Phillimore as he would later be known. Hence, like the many wise men discussed in this volume, each need their own monograph to flesh out the full picture of how they lived and practiced law, including their contributions to the evolution of international law and its sources from the twentieth century onwards. This biographical note is only a small step in the direction on Walter Phillimore.
